Maastricht is the host city for roughly 2,000 participants of the four-day congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM) in 2016. This was recently announced in Paris, after the city presented itself as a candidate there. Winning this convention is the result of close cooperation between the Maastricht University Centre+, the Maastricht Convention Bureau, MECC Maastricht and other parties.
Professor dr. Jan Nijhuis, gynaecologist and director of the department
of gynaecology and obstetrics at Maastricht UMC+, is extremely pleased
with the acquisition of the scientific conference in which all European
countries are involved. “This news is reason for a celebration.” The
European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM) convention has the
medical specializations neonatology, obstetrics / gynaecology,
epidemiology and pathology. In the past, the biennial convention took
place in Athens, Istanbul, Granada, Paris and Florence. “That’s a nice
list of cities to be part of”, says Nijhuis.
Promotional film of Maastricht
In Paris, Nijhuis represented a delegation that presented the capital of
Limburg in order to bring the convention to Maastricht. Part of the
presentation was the new promotional film of Maastricht, produced by
T36. ‘The promotional film has had a clear added value in convincing the
voters’, says Sonja Opreij-Speth, Sales Manager Conventions of the
Maastricht Convention Bureau. ‘The film was shown in a modified version
and got the viewer carried away in the many possibilities of Maastricht
and surrounding area for both business and leisure.’
Maastricht as a convention city
Maastricht was chosen not only for the merits of Jan Nijhuis in his long
academic career as a gynaecologist, but also because of the
compactness and ambiance of the city and the beautiful convention centre
MECC. On behalf of the MECC, Mirjam Theunissen, responsible for
congresses related to the Maastricht Health Campus, expressed herself
very pleased about winning the EAPM convention. ‘Absolutely a
confirmation that by working together with the right partners, a lot can
be achieved in such a short period of time. Maastricht has got much to
offer and this result gives a lot of energy to move forward.’
