World Press Photo organises the worlds largest and most prestigious photography competition every year. After the competition all photo’s are brought together in a travelling exposition which is visited by more than one million people in forty countries.
Each year a book is published in six languages with all the winning photo’s. An other target of the organisation is to stimulate developments in photo journalism and encourage the exchange of knowledge.
The winner of the World Press Photo 2011 is the South African photographer Jodi Bieber. She made a portrait of the mutilated Bibi Aisha, an 18 year old girl from Uruzgan. Aisha escaped from her in-laws, because she was abused by her husband and his family. When she got back to her own parents she was taken outside by a group of men who cut off her nose and ears on command of the Taliban. In the local culture it is normal that when a man gets ashamed by his wife he loses his nose. For this reason they took Aisha’s nose. Care takers made sure that Aisha could go to America, where she now lives and receives therapy and plastic surgery.
The exposition is not only an overview of the best press photo’s of the year. At the same time it is an historical document.
